<p>The combined effect of androstene derivatives and UV irradiation on tumor cells and WI-38 lung fibroblast cells was studied. Suppression of proliferation of normal cells by 18% and HeLa tumor cells by 50% was observed under UV irradiation at a dose of 27 mJ/cm<sup>2</sup> for 30 minutes. Androstene derivatives increased the viability of both intact and irradiated fibroblasts. This effect was not associated with their direct antiradical activity, as shown in the ABTS test. Steroids had a cytotoxic effect on HeLa tumor cells, while UV irradiation almost doubled it. The discovered cytoprotective effect of steroids on normal cells and the chemosensitizing effect on tumor cells could serve as a prerequisite for the creation based on androstene derivatives of an effective protective agent against damaging electromagnetic radiation.</p>
