The Apoptotic Effects of Silver Nano-Particles and Spirulina Extract on Experimentally Induced Prostatic Cancer in Rats

Treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) is facing many challenges—one of them is androgen deprivation therapy relapse. Silver nano-particles (AgNPs) and Spirulina are promising substances for controlling PCa either alone or in combination. PCa was induced in rats using bicalutamide and testosterone. The second step was intraperitoneally injection of (7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene), then testosterone was injected s.c. for 3 months. AgNPs treatment showed no change in the PSA level compared to the PCa group. AgNPs up-regulated the expression of BAX, while Spirulina up-regulated Caspase 3, and down-regulated TNF-α. The combination of AgNPs/Spirulina up-regulated the P53, BAX, and BCL2 compared to the PCa group. A histopathological study showed the removal of the pattern of high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) among each group. AgNPs alone had little effect on HGPIN, while its combination with Spirulina improved its effects. Both Spirulina and bicalutamide normalized PCa architectures, reduced PSA level, and down-regulated TNF-α gene expression.
