<p>Common bean (<i>Phaseolus vulgaris</i> L<i>.</i>) is a critical legume crop in Ethiopia, serving as a primary source of nutrition and income for smallholder farmers. Despite its importance, production is hampered by limited genetic diversity, environmental stresses, and insufficient access to improved varieties. This study, conducted in Goro-Muti district, East Hararghe Zone, aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity, agronomic performance, and farmer preferences of 15 common bean varieties.A participatory approach was used, including on-farm trials, phenotypic characterization using seed and pod descriptors, and farmer surveys to assess varietal preferences based on traits such as seed color, yield, and stress tolerance. Data were collected for similarity/dissimilarity index, preference index, and genetic erosion. The result indicated that about fifteen (15) farmers’ varieties were identified by farmers. The highest preference index (6.02) with preference rank 1st was recorded for Jiner genotype. The genetic integrity was found to be 88% as genetic erosion was 12%. The major constraints of common bean cultivation as suggested by the respondents were land scarcity (38%), lack of improved variety (31%), replacement with commercial crop namely khat (19%), and lack of local legume-based food processing industry (12%). The result indicated that farmers prefer common bean varieties mainly based on seed color.By integrating farmers' preferences into breeding programs, this research supports the development of varieties that are both high-yielding and locally accepted. The study also underscores the need for policy interventions to strengthen seed systems, enhance genetic resource conservation, and build value chains for common beans.</p>
