Impact of competing opinions on epidemic spread: a virus transmission model with denier and vigilant groups in activity-driven networks

This paper investigates the impact of competition between two mutually exclusive opinions on the spread of an epidemic. The proposed virus transmission model, described by an activity-driven network, incorporates both denier and vigilant groups, allowing individuals to transition between these groups based on their opinions. Using the mean-field method, we derive an expression for the basic reproduction number and analyze the influence of key parameters. Our findings indicate that opinion exchange can weaken the negative impact of denier groups on virus transmission. Furthermore, numerical simulations reveal that social contact rates promote the development of dominant opinions, whereas categorical preferences have the opposite effect. These results highlight the importance of dynamically adapting intervention strategies to strengthen outbreak control in response to changes in public opinion.
