Sand and dust storms, sand encroachment, and drought in Kuwait: a basis for formulating a disaster risk reduction plan
摘要
This work investigates standardized definitions and management strategies for three environmental hazards, sand and dust storms (SDS), sand encroachment, and drought, in Kuwait through an extensive literature review combined with national hazard assessment data. These hazards pose significant threats to millions of people worldwide. The aim of this study is to characterize these hazards and evaluate appropriate management approaches to support the development of a comprehensive disaster risk reduction plan (DRRP) for Kuwait. Comprehending environmental hazards is the first step in developing DRRPs to mitigate their adverse effects. For SDS, for example, the first step is to identify dust emission sources, impact areas, and root causes. The development of DRRPs can significantly enhance the ability to understand and assess the impacts of such hazards, leading to more effective responses and better preparedness. This is achieved through a comprehensive understanding of the selected hazards, supported by evidence from the literature and case-specific observations, which the current study contributes to advancing specialized insights in this field.
