摘要

From its founding, the Arcadian “assembly” sought to restore “good taste” to its rightful place at the heart of Italian literary culture. They aimed to exemplify “correct thinking” and “proper composition,” rejecting the Baroque’s artificial pursuit of the unusual and the marvelous. The Arcadians’ preference for harmonious, balanced beauty and clear, direct expression came to dominate early eighteenth-century Italian poetry and significantly influenced literary trends beyond Italy, particularly through the language of musical theatre. The paper explores some of the distinctive linguistic features of Arcadian poetry, providing commentary on exemplary compositions that exemplify the topoi and forms most commonly employed by Arcadian “shepherds and shepherdesses”: the celebratory ode, the occasional sonnet, and the love song.
