Terry Pratchett’s “China” in Interesting Times
摘要
In Interesting Times Terry Pratchett created a reality inspired mostly by ancient Chinese history and culture. This paper discusses several features of the Agatean Empire that appear similar to Chinese or other East-Asian cultures, or rather the Western stereotypes of those cultures. The Agatean Empire cannot be regarded as a representation of China in any actual historical period. The social-political aspect seems central: it is the history of a revolution, after all. On the one hand, the novel takes a stand against tyrannical and oppressive social arrangements; on the other hand, it is rather sceptical about revolutionary movements, while advertising a humanistic credo.
