The Search for Neurophysiological Markers of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: Ocular Microtremor and Contrast Sensitivity

Objective. To examine ocular microtremor (OMT) and contrast sensitivity (CS) as potential neurophysiological markers of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Materials and methods. The study included 85 patients diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia (F20.0) or schizotypal (F21) or schizoaffective (F25.X) disorders and 29 healthy participants. CS was assessed using the adaptive staircase procedure and OMT was evaluated using video recording. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Simpson– Angus Scale (SAS) for extrapyramidal symptoms were used as psychometric methods. Results. Patients with SSD showed decreases in CS at spatial frequencies of 1.0 and 10 cyc/deg, along with a decrease in the frequency and an increase in the amplitude of OMT as compared with healthy subjects (p < 0.05). These differences persisted even in patients without long-term use of antipsychotics as compared with healthy controls. Conclusions. In the light of the data obtained, OMT and CS parameters appear to be promising study objects in the context of the search for neurophysiological markers of schizophrenia.
