Assessment of Cognitive Functions in Elderly Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Objectives. To compare the cognitive status of individuals over 60 years of age depending on the presence or absence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Materials and methods. The study involved 193 patients: 93 without DM2 and 100 with DM2. The average age of patients with DM2 was 73 [68; 78] years and that of patients without DM2 was 69.2 [64; 75] years. Cognitive functions were assessed using the McNeur–Khan scale, in which scores above the threshold of 42 corresponded to the presence of cognitive dysfunction. Results. Patients with DM2 had higher total scores on the McNeur–Khan scale: a mean of 27.0 ± 9.36 in the group with DM2, compared with 22.0 ± 9.60 in the group without DM2 (p < 0.043). The absence of DM2 correlated negatively with total scores on the cognitive impairment risk assessment scale (p = –0.264, p < 0.001). In addition, age over 75 years was found to have a significant association with the development of cognitive impairment regardless of the presence of concomitant DM2 (OR = 1.247, CI = 95%, 1.112–1.4 00, p < 0.001). Conclusion. DM2 increases the risk of developing cognitive dysfunction, which should be taken into account in older patients for timely detection and prevention of its progression.
