摘要

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune demyelinating disease which is diagnosed twice as often in women as in men, the difference being especially clear in groups of familial cases and at ages under 35 years. The cohort of patients diagnosed with MS includes many young and middle-aged women planning a future pregnancy and currently wishing to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy. In addition, reducing the frequency of abortions has obvious importance for patients with MS. This raises the question of which drugs are safe, convenient, and effective for this group of patients. Estrogen is among the modern treatments proposed for reducing relapses and progression of MS. The strategy of choice may therefore consist of using estrogen-containing oral contraceptives as an approach to providing effective protection against pregnancy and, at the same time, possibly influencing the course of the underlying disease in a positive way.
