<p>Postlingually deafened patients, in contrast to those losing their hearing at an early age retain previously formed control based on the direct connection between hearing and speech. In addition, patients with hearing impairment show changes in the process of speech production as compared with those with normal hearing, these changes resulting from degradation of the auditory feedback connection. The extent to which hearing aids can compensate for impairment to auditory control due to hearing loss remains poorly understood. A study was conducted on the effect of auditory control restored by adequate hearing aids on articulatory motor skills. A comparison was made of the durations of stressed vowels and individual words in speech pronounced with and without a hearing aid in 12 speakers (including six men) with grade III chronic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Hearing aids were found to lead to significant reductions in the durations of the stressed vowels [a], [i], and [u], which form the vertices of the vowel triangle of the Russian language, regardless of position, i.e., at the beginning, middle, and end of a word, as compared to speaking without hearing aids. In most cases, stressed vowel durations changed by approximately 10% and the durations of individual words containing such vowels changed by about 5%. The decreases in the durations of stressed vowels and individual words may provide an objective indicator for assessing the effectiveness of hearing aids in restoring auditory-speech feedback and normalizing speech motor skills.</p>
