<p>This literature review assesses data obtained over the past 10 years on the relationship between inflammatory markers and the severity of negative symptoms in schizophrenia. A systematic search of the PubMed, Mendeley, and eLibrary databases was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Of the 407 publications found by keywords, seven studies were selected providing quantitative assessments of the relationship between inflammatory marker concentrations and the severity of negative disorders in schizophrenia. Three publications reported statistically significant positive correlations between tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels and scores on the negative subscale of the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS): two of moderate strength and two of weak strength. Two studies recorded significant moderate and weak associations of negative symptoms with interleukins (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10. A relationship was found between negative symptoms and the concentrations of C-reactive protein and autoantibodies to neurotrophin S100b and myelin basic protein (MBP). In addition, immunoinflammatory indexes – the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the monocyte:lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and the systemic immune inflammation index (SII) – which generally reflect the direction of the inflammatory response, were associated with the severity of negative disorders. The studies analyzed here provide convincing evidence of significant relationships between a number of cytokines and the severity of negative symptoms, which confirms previously published data on the pathogenetic role of neuroinflammation in forming negative symptoms.</p>
