<p>Deficit of social contacts in socially living species, including humans, provokes the development of chronic stress, leading to disorders in the psychoemotional domain, the development of cognitive impairment, etc. We have previously shown impairments to spatial memory and passive avoidance in rats subjected to many months of social isolation (SI) from an early age are more pronounced in females than in males. Insufficient studies on females have been reported. The aim of the present work was to evaluate learning of a conditioned active avoidance reflex (CAAR) in the two-way avoidance paradigm and to check the retention of the skill in female rats subjected to SI starting after pups were separated from their mothers and continued for up to 10 months. Rats were trained in the CAAR test after 6.5 months of SI, when their anxiety level and extent of grooming were lower than in rats kept in groups. Rats subjected to SI performed fewer avoidance reactions, but more escape reactions, and reached the learning criterion less often. Twenty-four hours after training, the latency of escape reactions in isolated rats was increased, while the maximum number of avoidance reactions in a row was reduced. Two months after training, no differences in retention of the CAAR were found between rats living in different conditions. After 10 months of SI, the serum corticosterone level in the experimental rats was lower than that in rats of the control group. These results identify worse learning and retention of the skill 24 h after training in the CAAR test in rats under the influence of long-term SI.</p>
