Potential for Stimulating Epileptic Seizures Using Deep Stereo EEG Electrodes in Presurgical Diagnosis in Patients with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy

Electrical stimulation mapping using deep stereo EEG electrodes is an important method in the presurgical diagnosis of patients with drug-resistant forms of epilepsy. Electrical stimulation mapping was first used in the 1960s and has been actively developed ever since, though despite such a long history, no unified protocol for the use of this technique has been developed; different countries use different approaches to stimulation mapping. Based on publications on this topic listed on PubMed and other available resources, the present review briefly outlines current opinion on the significance of this technique, special attention being paid to the methodological approaches used by different schools to defining stimulation parameters for mapping epileptogenic zones; approaches to stimulation of functionally significant zones are highlighted in a separate section. Data on the effectiveness of this method in the framework of the presurgical diagnosis of epilepsy are also summarized.
