Background <p>Many studies about the anxiolytic and antidepressant of <i>Lemon verbena</i> were found, but no studies delineated a direct link between affective disorders in diabetics and the mechanism of <i>Lemon verbena</i> effect on neurobehavioral disorders.</p> Objective <p>The current study aimed to investigate if treatment with <i>Lemon verbena</i> methanolic extract (<i>LVME)</i> improves hyperglycemia-related affective disorders by mitigating oxidative stress (OS) in rats rendered diabetic by streptozotocin (STZ).</p> Methods <p>After intraperitoneal injection of STZ, experimental diabetes was induced and confirmed. Then, the normal rat received distilled water, however, three diabetic group rats were treated with <i>LVME</i>, Metformin, for 28 days respectively. The examination of affective disorders was assessed using the neurobehavioral test, and the prefrontal cortex (CPF) OS markers were evaluated also.</p> Results <p>Our study revealed that treatment with <i>LVME</i> reduced the STZ effect on behavioral disorders in the OFT, EPM, and FST demonstrating their anxiolytic, and antidepressive effect. This can be explained by the amelioration of antioxidant enzymes, and reduction in oxidant markers at the PFC in the treated group with <i>LVME</i>.</p> Conclusion <p>The <i>LVME</i> ameliorated the anxiety and depression-like effects in rats rendered diabetic by STZ- injection, which its antioxidant activity in PFC region might explain.</p>

Background

Objective
