<p>The field of enzyme engineering has seen significant advancements with the development of fusion enzymes, which combine the properties of different enzymes through genetic manipulation. This review explores the effects of fusion on protein properties, improved catalytic efficiency, stability, and activity, as well as enhanced protein expression, solubility, and immobilization. We discuss strategies for preparing enzyme fusions, artificial linking techniques, and the construction of novel fusion enzymes for specific applications. Case studies demonstrate the utility of enzyme fusions in various bio-catalytic processes, including ketocarotenoid production, insect P450 fusion enzymes, and bi-functional enzymes for improved bio-processing. The application of fusion enzymes is presented as a versatile and promising approach in biotechnology, offering a platform for tailoring enzymes to meet the demands of diverse biotechnological and industrial processes.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
