Coping strategies used during the COVID-19 pandemic may be a result of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trait responses to emotion (TREs). TREs are personality traits that develop from consistent coping strategy use and are characterized by three latent dimensions: Approach/Avoidance, Control/Dyscontrol, and Engagement/Disengagement. Cloudresearch participants (N = 374) completed a web-based assessment of personality, ACE, TRE, and coping. Higher prevalence of ACEs was associated with less TRE Approach and Control and with more Engagement. Mediation models determined TRE Approach was a robust pathway between ACEs and problem- and emotion-focused coping strategies. TRE engagement was a robust pathway between ACEs and social and emotional coping strategies. TRE control was not a robust pathway between ACEs and coping strategies, except for substance use. Early life adversity influenced development of TREs which then impacted how people coped with the COVID-19 pandemic. Early life context and emotion-based personality traits influence variation in coping response and can inform recommendations for coping across situations.
