<p>Following the motivational intensity hypothesis, cardiac effort (e.g., as indexed by the pre-ejection period; PEP) should depend in part on individual differences in motivation, like anhedonia. However, relevant studies have rarely measured anhedonia itself and have not tested this hypothesis in clinical samples during naturalistic rewards. Moreover, none have parsed effects of anhedonia from those of anxiety, which commonly co-occurs but may have opposing effects on cardiac effort. In a clinical youth sample (<i>N</i> = 162, <i>M</i><sub>age</sub>=12.03yrs; 47% female; 60% minoritized race/ethnicity), we captured anhedonia and anxiety multimodally and measured PEP during a naturalistic positive activity with parents. We accounted for incentive value by observing parents’ supportive behavior. Anhedonia was associated with longer PEP, specifically the between-person (intercept) variance in PEP from a non-linear growth model. Importantly, this relationship was robust against the effects of anxiety. Findings support the hypothesis that cardiac effort mobilization is related to individual differences in motivation and contribute new evidence of specificity and construct validity for this effect.</p>
