Influence of New AA 2XXX Layers on the Energy Absorption Properties of Fiber Metal Laminates

This research article analyzed the influence of novel AA 2xxx layers on the energy absorption properties of fiber metal laminates (FML). An aluminum alloy (new AA 2xxx) with improved energy absorption and bird strike resistance properties was proposed as a candidate material for aircraft wing/tail leading edges. Compared to the conventional alloy AA 2024-T3, new AA 2xxx showed 20.42% increase in tensile strength and 25% improvement in energy absorption properties. Compared to GLARE™ laminate, the yield strength of the FML tailored with new AA 2xxx increased by an average of 20.87%, and the matrix failure strength increased by an average of 20.22%. The study also found that at the same displacement rate, the tensile toughness (deformation energy) of the laminate with greater metal thickness (new FML 5-2/1-0.4) is 49.6% higher than that of laminate with less metal thickness (new FML 5-2/1-0.2).
