<p>Using the Rayleigh method, an expression was derived for the calculation of the stress in the crust of a&#xa0;cylindrical billet in the upper part of the mold. Key parameters, including the temperature gradient in the shell, its thickness, melt superheat, and billet diameter, were taken into account. Based on the stress and temperature gradient values calculated in Ansys, the exponent for the Kossovich number was determined. It is shown that the stresses in the billet crust depend on the mold design and its cooling system.</p>
