Effects of hydrazide nucleating agents on crystallization and mechanical properties of polyethylene terephthalate

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) contains rigid benzene rings, which restrict molecular chain movement and result in poor crystallization properties. The addition of nucleating agents is a highly effective approach to regulate its crystallization behavior. In this study, hydrazide nucleating agents tetramethylenedicarbonyl dibenzoylhydrazine (TMC-306) and octamethylenedicarboxylic dibenzoylhydrazide (TMC-300) were incorporated into the PET matrix via melt blending, and their effects on the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of PET were systematically investigated. The results showed that the addition of 0.9 mass% TMC-306 and TMC-300 increased the crystallization temperature of PET by 24.55 ℃ and 21.7 ℃, respectively, the relative crystallinity increased to 32.49% and 31.71%, while the complete crystallization time was shortened from 10 to 3 min 30 s and 4 min, respectively. Mechanical property tests indicated that the nucleating agent TMC-306 at 0.1 mass% addition increased the tensile strength of PET by 48.7%, while TMC-300 only increased by 8.9%; however, when the addition amount of TMC-300 in PET reached 0.9 mass%, the tensile strength of PET was increased by 35.4%, while that of PET nucleated with TMC-306 was decreased to a value slightly higher than that of pure PET. In terms of flexural modulus, TMC-306 achieved a 25.6% improvement at 0.3 mass%, which was superior to the 19.2% for TMC-300.
