Effect of solid lipids on the properties of nanostructured lipid carriers: particle size, thermal behavior and crystal structure

Nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) is an effective drug delivery system and has significant applications in targeted drug delivery. This study developed NLCs by emulsification sonication utilizing waxes, fatty alcohols, and fatty acids as solid lipids. Particle size (PS), polydispersity index (PDI), Zeta potential (ZP), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the NLCs. The results showed that most of the NLCs were well dispersed with an average particle size of less than 1000 nm. The crystallinity of the NLCs increased with the length of the fatty alcohol chain and the content of solid lipids, which is beneficial for the encapsulation of active substances by the NLCs. This discovery provides certain guidance for the preparation of NLC with good stability and less prone to leakage in the fields of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
