An experimental study on the effect of Al2O3/oil and Span80/oil lubricants on improving the performance of compression refrigeration systems

In the present study, Al2O3 nanolubricants and oil/Span80 mixture used as an alternative for lubricating oil in a vapor compression refrigeration system (VCRS) for cooling with pure refrigerant R600a. In the first experiment, Al2O3 nanoparticles were added to mineral oil in different mass concentrations (0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 0.7%) and sorbitan monooleate (Span80) was used as the surfactant to increase the stability of the mixture. In the second experiment, mineral oil containing Span80 was used as the lubricant in VCRS. The results prove that the use of Al2O3 nanolubricants will increase coefficient of performance, COP, and ultimately optimize energy consumption in the compression refrigeration cycle. In the best case scenario, at the optimum point (φ = 0.3%), the power consumption dropped from 0.14 to 0.112 kWh, while COP increased by 25% from 3.63 to 4.6. On the other hand, the use of oil/Span80 mixture yielded positive results, in that the COP was increased by 22% to 4.3, and its energy consumption was reduced by 0.115 kW. Considering the higher cost of nanolubricants and stabilization problems of nanoparticles, in the present study, oil/Span80 mixture will be proposed as a good lubricant for VCRS that increases COP and decreases power consumption of the system.
