Thermodynamic and solubility studies of ThF4 in LiCl–KCl–ThF4 molten salt system

The isobaric molar heat capacities as well as enthalpy increments of ThF4 have been measured along with the enthalpy of mixing of ThF4 in (Li0.59K0.41)Cl melt. Enthalpy of mixing of LiCl and KCl binary melt has been measured at 935 K, and it was used for determination of ternary enthalpy of mixing for LiCl–KCl–ThF4 system. Gibbs energy of mixing of ThF4(s) in LiCl–KCl eutectic melt (LKE) has been determined from the enthalpy of mixing data. DTA analysis was carried out for determination of partial pseudo-binary phase diagram along the ThF4-LKE isopleth which was used to determine the solubility limits of ThF4 in LKE at various temperatures. The solubility limit of ThF4 in LKE was found to be 3.0 mol% ThF4 at 935 K.
