Sourceless efficiency calibration method for irregularly shaped radioactive samples with HPGe γ-ray spectrometers

To enable rapid efficiency calibration for irregularly shaped samples with High Purity Germanium (HPGe) γ-ray spectrometers. This study presents a sourceless efficiency calibration method based on numerical computation, Monte Carlo simulation, and 3-dimensional scanning technology. Using this method, efficiency calibration was performed on a uranium ore sample in different orientations and shapes, and its specific activities were measured and calculated by an HPGe γ-ray spectrometer and compared with values obtained using conventional sample preparation method. The experiment results confirmed the potential of this sourceless efficiency calibration method.
