Gamma-ray spectrometry of the Dababiya GSSP (Egypt): uranium enrichment at PETM and radiological hazard assessment

This study presents gamma spectrometry analyses of 40K, 238U and 232Th in the Dababiya Quarry Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), Egypt to evaluate uranium mobility and potential environmental hazards in this globally significant site. Uranium enrichment peaks in the Esna Formation are, up to 248 Bq/kg in the Hanadi Member, far exceeding global background levels (33 Bq/kg), aligning with known PETM anoxia. Disequilibrium in 226Ra/238U and positive uranium remobilization index (RmI) values indicate post-depositional uranium migration. Radiological hazard indices (Raeq, Hex, Hin, Iγ) are below international safety thresholds, suggesting minimal external exposure risk.
