<p>The present study assessed the level of heavy metals in soil and food crops near Babban Tsauni gold mines and associated ecological and health risks. Concentrations of metals such as As, Mn, Cr, Zn, Co, Cu, and Fe (in ppm) were determined using Instrumental Neutron activation analysis, while Pb and Ni (ppm) were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Results revealed that the soil was contaminated with Pb, Mn, and Fe exceeding WHO limits, with tubers having higher metal concentrations than grains. Pb, Ni, Cr, and Zn levels in all crops exceeded FAO limits. Hence, pollution indices indicated varying degrees of contamination, from low to very high, and the populations, especially children, are likely to experience adverse non-carcinogenic risks due to exposure to soil around the mines.</p>
