Displacement complexing chromatography with DTPA-based eluents under irradiation conditions

The effect of ionizing radiation on the separation of rare earth elements by displacement complexing chromatography on KU-2 sulfocationite was investigated using sodium diethylenetriamine pentaacetate solutions for the eluent and an electron accelerator for the external irradiation source. Absorbed doses up to 10 MGy per sorbent and up to 0.1 MGy per eluent were applied. With increasing absorbed dose, a decrease in complexing agent concentration and an increase in eluate pH were observed; the concentration curve of eluted elements has a maximum. The decrease in separation efficiency is associated with a reduced number of separation bands due to the loss of irradiated sorption capacity and a lower REE content in the solid phase as a result of eluent irradiation.
