Optimization and validation of combustion-based analysis of organically bound tritium in pine needles

Organically bound tritium (OBT) analysis by liquid scintillation counter measurement requires combustion to release OBT; however, the combustion process presents several challenges. In this study, we optimized the combustion process for OBT analysis using a semi-automatic system with a temperature-programmable electric furnace. A 5 cm-diameter quartz tube was used to accommodate large sample volumes, and a honeycomb catalyst was placed downstream in the tube to ensure complete oxidation of combustion gases. To validate the optimized system, we conducted a comparative experiment using a pine needle standard reference material, and the measured OBT values showed good agreement with the reported values.
