Study of radon and thoron exhalation rates in common building materials of Jowai region Meghalaya, India

Elevated levels of radon and thoron in indoor environments may pose serious health hazards to the inhabitants. Considering the significant contribution of building materials to the overall indoor activity of radon and thoron; an assessment of radon mass exhalation rate (Jm) and thoron surface exhalation rate (Js) from some common building materials samples of the Jowai region has been carried out using a scintillation based detector-Smart RnDuO. Results revealed a wide range of variation in the values of Jm (290 ± 10–12,100 ± 1120 mBq kg−1 h−1) and Js (16 ± 5–1224 ± 183 Bq m−2 h−1) for different building materials, where sand and cemented brick witnessed the highest values. Besides, the variability of Jm and Js with varying sizes of grain has been investigated, and it is found that both Jm and Js show a decreasing pattern with an increase in grain size. The influence of meteorological parameters on the measured parameters is also studied. The details of the obtained results are discussed in the manuscript.
