<p>This article investigates how universities create and sustain Academic Spin-Offs (ASOs) and provides insights into a university-firm relationship that supports the sustainability of ASOs while maintaining knowledge-based characteristics. By studying seven ASOs generated within a university ecosystem, we explore how universities may support ASOs developed in their labs during their formation and market journey. Our results focus on improved resources for ASO installation and mentoring through the effective use of available resources in not fully developed entrepreneurial university ecosystems. The findings highlight a symbiotic relationship between ASOs and university labs, enabling innovation and market adaptation, with clear roles established for research and business environments. We propose a framework emphasising the Principal Investigators’ (PIs) core competencies to connect academia and business, ensuring sustainable ASO success. Our results show that lab PIs mediate academic and market needs. Furthermore, our findings provide insights into policy formulation to promote the generation of ASOs and their sustainable progression in the market.</p>
