Higher education institutions as co-innovation partners: compensating, complementing, and facilitating firms’ co-innovation to their optimum possibility frontier
摘要
This study evaluates if and how HEIs form part of the optimal innovation network configurations across firms with different co-innovative potential and digital competency levels. The proposed hypotheses are tested by using a sequential deductive triangulation analysis (QUAN → qual) on a unique sample from the Global Competitiveness Project of 734 firms from seven OECD countries for 2019. The findings of the quantitative model reveal that HEIs are essential co-innovation partners that contribute to firms’ innovation efficiency. The complementary qualitative results of the study emphasize the compensatory, complementary, and facilitatory roles of HEIs in helping businesses within innovation systems reach their optimum innovation possibility frontier.
