Doru luteipes: Susceptibility to Entomopathogenic Fungi and the Role of Maternal Care in the Protection of Offspring Against Infection

Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae), feeds on several arthropod pests. To ensure the continuity of this predator, it is important to adopt sustainable solutions for pest management, as the application of microbiological products. However, compatibility among these agents must be confirmed. While it is known that the earwig protects and cares for its offspring, the role of maternal care against fungal infections has not been clarified. The objective of this study was to verify whether the isolates IBCB 66 (Beauveria bassiana) and IBCB 425 (Metarhizium anisopliae) (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) are pathogenic to D. luteipes, and whether maternal care can protect eggs and nymphs against infection. Increasing concentrations of isolates, 104 to 108 conidia.mL−1, were tested for their effect under topical and dry film exposure, at different exposure times. The role of maternal care was evaluated in tests with presence/absence of this care and total/partial exposure of eggs to spores. The average mortality of D. luteipes due to infection was low (< 15%), linked to high viability of eggs and nymphs. Egg viability was high in the presence of the female, but, in her absence, the infection rate was 47.6% for B. bassiana and 54.5% for M. anisopliae. Infection of nymphs by total and partial exposure to B. bassiana was similar; however, in the absence of the female, the percentage of infected nymphs was 34.2%. Contamination of nymphs was greater when eggs were partially exposed to M. anisopliae; maternal care reduced the percentage of infected nymphs from 78.4% to 11.7%. Both isolates were selective to D. luteipes. Maternal care ensured successful embryonic development.
