<p>The predominant consensus is a negative association between a material’s hydrophobicity and its ability for water absorption. While hydrophilic materials attract and absorb water, hydrophobic materials are inclined to repel water and have restricted water absorption. This review article focuses on establishing a correlation between hydrophobicity and water absorption. The effect of different parameters such as chemical structure and heterogeneity, surface morphology, material aging and degradation, temperature and environmental conditions and porous structure was studied. Additionally, the article also emphasizes different water absorption and surface energy models which help in the determination of different characteristics of the materials. It also emphasises on the different applications such as wood industry, food packaging, antibacterial materials, hydrates storage and stability, indicator films, adsorption and photocatalytic performance, corrosion resistance and oil–water separation.</p>
