Effect of neighborhood environment on the health behavior in older adults: a systematic review
摘要
The neighborhood environment indirectly influences the overall health of older adults by promoting healthy behaviors, such as walking. This study aims to investigate the impact of the neighborhood environment on health behaviors among older adults, providing a foundation for future research in this field of studies. The theoretical section assesses concepts related to health behaviors, the neighborhood environment, and the significance of the environment for the elderly. In the practical section, relevant studies addressing these concepts were evaluated. The results and a summary of the components identified in the field of behaviors related to the health of the elderly within the neighborhood environment were discussed by selecting related works. A total of 46 studies were extracted from databases, including Scopus, ProQuest, PubMed, and JSTOR through a systematic search. The findings suggest that both the physical environment -comprising elements such as accessibility, traffic safety, land use diversity, proximity to destinations, and aesthetics- and the social environment -encompassing safety from crime, public spaces, and social interactions (each with specific sub-components)- significantly influence health behaviors in older adults. These health behaviors include physical activity (PA), healthy dietary habits, interpersonal communication, and the avoidance of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. Furthermore, individual characteristics in older adults, such as income, gender, age, and education level, serve as mediating factors influencing their engagement in health behaviors. This research highlights the necessity for policymakers and urban planners to develop environments that enable older adults to lead healthier and more active lives, thereby directly enhancing their overall quality of life.
