Work-from-home architecture: a systematic review of spatial challenges in telework environments

Teleworking, as the new normal in the information age, has fundamentally transformed the conventional boundaries between residential and workspaces. This paradigm shift necessitates a redefinition of residential architecture and a critical examination of emerging challenges associated with home-based work environments. A review of the existing literature reveals a fragmented and unidimensional treatment of teleworking’s spatial, environmental, and psychological aspects, lacking an integrated and interdisciplinary framework that can comprehensively address the complex challenges inherent to these settings. The present study aims to bridge this gap by proposing a systematic and integrative approach to analyze the role of architecture in enhancing telework experiences within domestic contexts. A systematic literature search was conducted in the prominent databases Scopus and Web of Science. Following rigorous filtering and manual screening, 50 relevant articles were selected for quantitative and qualitative analyses. The quantitative analysis encompassed bibliometric mapping, publication trend analysis, and conceptual clustering using VOSviewer software, while the qualitative investigation employed thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s framework. Through this thematic approach, factors influencing the quality of work-from-home environments were categorized into two principal domains: Environmental Comfort and Environmental Psychology. The findings underscore the critical importance of architectural features, such as optimized lighting, temperature regulation, ventilation, acoustic management, and ergonomic design, in improving the functionality and comfort of home workspaces. Concurrently, the Environmental Psychology domain emphasizes the importance of coherent spatial organization, privacy preservation, and functional separation between work and living areas, which collectively help mitigate stress, reduce role conflict, and enhance cognitive focus. Ultimately, grounded in these insights, the study presents a set of architectural design and housing policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the quality and sustainability of teleworking environments within residential settings.
