<p>The residential relocation process involves three sequential stages (decision to move, search process, and location choice) with several interlinked decision dimensions (trigger, urgency, tenure type, dwelling type, search criteria, information source, search duration, and others). These interlinked decisions may result in distinct decision trajectories representing spatial and temporal heterogeneity in choice set development. In current residential relocation modeling literature, these decisions/dimensions are modeled independently, and if dependency is considered, it is limited to two or three decisions. Moreover, the choice set generation process is random without any consideration for the search process of households. Therefore, the present study aims to identify the distinct decision trajectories arising from the linkages across these decision dimensions, providing evidence of variation in choice set development and overall decision-making processes during the residential relocation process. Ninety survey responses from recently moved households were analyzed using a constructivist grounded theory approach. The analysis identified three broad decision trajectories and nineteen sub-decision trajectories, each varying in decision structure, trigger type, urgency, search type, search criteria, and search duration; these variations may lead to distinct choice set development. The study provides a novel and inductive approach to developing a more behaviourally realistic residential relocation process model representing all decision dimensions.</p>
