Robert D. Hare’s Contributions to the Study of Corporate Psychopathy
摘要
The idea that individuals with psychopathic personalities could work in organizations and have successful careers was once thought an impossibility. The “downward spiral” of their lives, together with run-ins with the law, would be barriers to their hiring and career success. However, as the research of Robert D. Hare has shown, this belief was not only based on incorrect assumptions but, in actuality, was far from what really happens in real life. The challenges in studying corporate psychopathy are two-fold: to develop a sound measurement of the concept acceptable to the business world and to avoid sensationalism that sometimes surrounds any mention of “psychopaths” in the popular press. Hare addressed both of these in his efforts to advance the research on how psychopaths operate in the real world. A historical overview outlining the steps taken by Hare to advance this field of study with these objectives in mind, as well as his influence on the study of psychopathy in workplaces, is presented.
