<p>Pathological lying was documented in the late 1800s and early 1900s by prominent figures in psychiatry and psychology. Recent theory and research have supported the notion of pathological lying as a distinct diagnostic entity. The onset of pathological lying has been identified to be in late childhood and adolescence, indicating cognitive developmental markers for etiology. The current study recruited 512 adolescent participants and their parents to examine the pathological lying profile among adolescents, the role of executive functioning, and its importance as a clinical symptom. Participants were asked to complete a lie frequency measure, the pathological lying inventory, Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children, the and the Delis-Rating of Executive Functions. We found evidence of pathological lying in 63 participants, telling an average of about 10 lies per day with impairment in functioning, greater distress, and more prone to danger. Executive functioning scores were significantly elevated in the pathological lying sample, indicating problems in executive functioning. More specifically, attention/working memory and activity level/impulse control were clinically elevated. Pathological lying was found to be an important clinical symptom. The current study provides evidence of pathological lying within adolescence and association with executive functioning deficits. Further implications will be discussed.</p>
