<p>A facile microwave hydrothermal method has been utilized to prepare gold spheres from chloroauric acid, in which ascorbic acid is used as the reducing agent and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) are selected as the dispersants. By changing the amount of ascorbic acid, the type of dispersant, and pH value, three kinds of gold spheres are obtained with different morphologies and sizes. The self-assembled growth process and the effect on the size and morphology of the gold powders are illustrated. Different gold spheres were used to prepare four kinds of gold pastes. The gold sphere with a dense and smooth surface as well as a diameter of 500–800 nm showed excellent conductivity and sintering density when used as sintered gold conductors. This work is beneficial for the preparation of gold spheres and their application in electronics and military industries.</p>
