<p>BiVO<sub>4</sub> photocatalyst with varying Zn doping concentrations was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The effects of zinc doping on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of BiVO<sub>4</sub> nanoparticles were investigated. The existence of Zn, Bi, V, and O elements in BiVO<sub>4</sub> nanoparticles (NPs) was confirmed by XPS. The XRD pattern shows the shift from monoclinic to tetragonal crystal phase of BiVO<sub>4</sub> photocatalyst after Zn doping. A UV–Vis absorbance spectrometer was used to examine the band gap energy of both pure BiVO<sub>4</sub> and Zn-doped BiVO<sub>4</sub> NPs. The photoluminescence spectrum demonstrates that following Zn doping, the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and holes in BiVO<sub>4</sub> was decreased. We compared and evaluated the solar photocatalytic activity of Zn-BiVO<sub>4</sub> and pure BiVO<sub>4</sub> nanoparticles for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. The formation of heterojunction between monoclinic and tetragonal phases is responsible for enhanced photocatalytic activity. The recycle performance of Zn-doped BiVO<sub>4</sub> NPs was also tested.</p>
