Effects of urban environmental factors on the water-exiting behaviour of predaceous diving beetles

Some urban environmental factors might exhibit various disturbances to behaviours and populations of aquatic insects such as dytiscids (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), while monitoring of their population changes along with urbanisation is lacking. Our questionnaires with 497 water sport participants and recreational anglers suggested the colonization of dytiscids in a subtropical city in China, where urbanisation has been ongoing gradually. To elucidate the interference of potential stresses to dytiscids in urban environments, we experimentally tested the respective effect of artificial light at night, unfavourable water temperatures, and starvation on the water-exiting behaviour of Dytiscus sinensis Feng adults, an indicator of dytiscids’ own assessment of the habitat suitability. Artificial light at night significantly suppressed their water-exiting behaviour in comparison to the dark condition. Water temperature at 32 °C drove more individuals to exit water than 25 °C. The water-exiting rates did not differ between water temperatures at 16 °C and 25 °C or between starved and fed individuals. These results highlight the factors that can be mitigated to aid in the future conservation of dytiscids.
