<p>Distromatic foliose algae of the genus <i>Ulva</i> are very difficult to identify due to their simple morphology and variable characteristics. This can result in misidentification of algae and inaccurate biodiversity estimates in many cases. <i>Ulva fenestrata</i> is currently the only confirmed distromatic foliose <i>Ulva</i> species reported from the Russian Pacific coast, while the flora of the adjacent areas is richer in distromatic species. It has been hypothesized that <i>U. fenestrata</i> in Russian Pacific represents a complex of morphologically similar species, with more than one taxon occurring in this region. To test this hypothesis, molecular analysis using ITS and <i>rbc</i>L sequences of 33 field-collected specimens from 9 localities was performed and revealed that two distinct taxa were present in the region: <i>Ulva australis</i> and <i>U. fenestrata</i>. These data show that <i>U. fenestrata</i> is distributed along the entire Pacific coast of Russia, while <i>U. australis</i> is only found in its southern part (Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan and southern Sakhalin Island). Detailed morphological analysis allowed us to reveal morphological traits that distinguish these species. The main features distinguishing <i>U. australis</i> from <i>U. fenestrata</i> are highlighted.</p>
