<p>For the past 20&#xa0;years, the frequency of red tide blooms along the Chinese coast has shown an increasing trend and research on red tide control and prevention has received extensive attention. The bioremediation role of seaweeds is getting more attention because of its economic and environmental-friendly features. In this work, the inhibition effects of different states (fresh samples, dried powder at seedling and mature stage) of the brown alga <i>Saccharina japonica</i> on two harmful dinoflagellates (<i>Amphidinium carterae</i> and <i>Prorocentrum donghaiense</i>) were studied. The results showed that <i>S. japonica</i> exerted inhibition effects on those two harmful dinoflagellates, altering the antioxidant and photosynthetic systems. The inhibitory effects of fresh seaweed samples differed with microalgae species. For <i>P. donghaiense</i>, combined with the effect of temperature, the fresh sample had a superior inhibitory effect than the dry powder groups. However, the opposite was found for <i>A. carterae,</i> as <i>A. carterae</i> had a negative effect on seaweed growth<i>.</i> In the dry powder group, the inhibitory effect of <i>S. japonica</i> at mature stage was found to be better than that at the seedling stage. This study provides the first experimental evidence characterizing the stage-dependent effects of <i>S. japonica</i> on dinoflagellates. In summary, our results demonstrated that the aquaculture of <i>S. japonica</i> can be used as an effective way for the biological control of harmful dinoflagellates, and after seaweed harvesting the dry powder of <i>S. japonica</i>, especially at mature stage, can be used as an environment-friendly algicide.</p>
