Standard method evaluation and modification for biostimulants containing alginic acid and humic substances

Five agricultural biostimulants containing alginic acid (AA) and humic substances (HS) were quantified for AA concentrations. The standard method was based on the color measurement of uronic acid degradation by carbazole. At lower concentrations, spectrophotometer readings showed a nonlinear pattern, producing inconsistent AA concentrations. Their coefficient of variations (CVs) fluctuated from 11.4 to 134.9%. Modification was made to the method by preparing multiple samples from each product at different dilution factors with the objective of identifying where the readings fell within the linear pattern. AA concentration of each product was calculated as an average from data generated within this region. More consistent results were obtained for all products, having AA of 0.36 to 11.79% with CVs ranging from 5.9 to 20.2%. It was found that HS interfered with the method producing inaccurate results that could be corrected using their control products.
