Supercritical CO2 extraction of lipids and bioactives from Gigartina pistillata

A sequence of pressurized stages has been proposed for the extraction of bioactives and biopolymers from Gigartina pistillata commercially dried biomass. The optimal supercritical CO2 extraction operation conditions were selected at 15 MPa, 50 ºC and 10% ethanol as polar modifier to maximize total yield and phenolic content in the extract, and the maximum total carotenoid yielded at 35 MPa, 50 ºC and 10% ethanol, whereas the polyunsaturated fatty acids content was enhanced under operation at 25 MPa, 50 ºC and 5% or at 60 ºC and 10% ethanol. Operating at optimal extraction time, up to 2.7% total yield was attained, which was 5.66% of the value with conventional solvent extraction. The carrageenan yields obtained from the residual solids by non-isothermal hydrothermal treatment during heating up to 160 ºC were lower than those obtained from the initial seaweed. However, the carrageenan extracted from the waste solids exhibited stronger gel properties, with higher viscoelastic features (2-folder) than those commercially available carrageenan.
