Testing the inhibitory effects of different algal extracts on fish intestinal metalloproteases using in vitro assays

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of enzymes widely distributed across vertebrates, playing crucial roles in various physiological processes, particularly those related to tissue remodeling. As demonstrated in humans, MMPs are also implicated in a range of inflammatory disorders, including those affecting the intestine. In farmed species, undesirable intestinal inflammation is commonly observed when plant-based ingredients are incorporated into feed formulations. The hypothesis of the present study is that these negative effects may be mitigated by the inclusion of algal products with MMP-inhibitory properties in the diet. Therefore, a preliminary investigation was designed to evaluate the presence and effects of potential MMP inhibitors in various algal products on intestinal MMP activity across several fish species. The results revealed that extracts from different fresh and processed species of brown and red seaweeds exhibited significant inhibitory activity against intestinal MMPs in three carnivorous fish species: Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), and gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Furthermore, in vitro assays simulating the digestive conditions of two fish species demonstrated that experimental feeds containing two types of algal meals maintained inhibitory effects on intestinal MMPs.
