The Relationship Between Resilience and Adaptation Among Freshmen: Evidence from an AwC Growth Model and a Growth Mixture Model

Based on an alignment-within-confirmatory factor analysis (AwC) growth model and a growth mixture model, this study examined the different trajectories of freshmen’s resilience and adaptation during the first semester. A total of 886 (81% female) freshmen completed a self-report survey at three time points. The AwC growth model revealed that individuals with a relatively lower initial level of resilience tended to experience a faster rate of growth. With a growth mixture modeling approach, we identified three heterogeneous development groups, namely Sustainable-Growth Group (15.24%), Growth-Decline Group (13.21%), and Growth-Stable Group (71.52%). In the Growth-Stable Group, it was found that female students had significantly lower levels of adaptation compared to male students at the beginning. However, as the initial level of adaptation increased, the decline in adaptation was slower. This study also suggests that resilience has a positive impact on adaptation. These findings contribute to our understanding of freshmen resilience.
