Purpose <p>This study aimed to examine the pathways through which children’s sensory processing influences maternal stress related to children’s eating behaviors, with eating behaviors as a mediating variable. Furthermore, the study compared these relationships between typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).</p> Methods <p>A total of 180 mothers of 90 TD children and 90 ASD children aged 3–8 years participated in the study. Sensory processing was assessed using the Korean Child Sensory Profile–2 (K-CSP2), while children’s eating behaviors were evaluated using the Brief Autism Mealtime Behavior Inventory (BAMBI). Maternal stress related to children’s eating behaviors was measured using stress ratings for each BAMBI item. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 23.0 for Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and multigroup analysis to examine mediating effects and group differences.</p> Results <p>SEM revealed that children’s sensory processing indirectly influenced maternal stress related to children’s eating behaviors through eating behaviors. Multigroup analysis indicated that in the ASD group, sensory processing had a stronger effect on both eating behaviors and maternal stress related to children’s eating behaviors, whereas in the TD group, eating behaviors more strongly influenced maternal stress related to children’s eating behaviors.</p> Conclusion <p>The study provides insights into the relationships among the three variables in both children with ASD and TD children, highlighting the necessity of sensory processing and eating-related interventions tailored to each group’s developmental level, as well as the importance of establishing family-centered support strategies.</p>

The Mediating Role of Eating Behaviors on the Relationship Between Sensory Processing and Maternal Stress: A Comparative Study of Children with ASD and Typical Development

Purpose

Methods
