Cyclic voltammetry application for recalibration of silver reference electrode in a technological molten medium

Silver reference electrode is widely used for the technological high-temperature processes control. The potential of this electrode is subject to drift as with any reference electrode. It is important to check the reference electrode potential not only before using it, but also during the process. Cyclic voltammetry method was applied for recalibration of silver reference electrodes with respect to the redox couple Cl2/Cl− on the working electrode. Investigations were conducted in LiCl–KCl melt as the most common technological molten medium. Limit ranges of method parameters were determined for obtaining reproducible values of chlorine potential: scan rates and upper vertex potentials or the minimum required anode current density. The method verification was carried out by comparing the parallel measurement results of electromotive force measurement method using standard chlorine reference electrode. Also for reliability assessment, thermodynamic data of AgCl formation in LiCl–KCl were determined by cyclic voltammetry method and compared with data of other methods. It was demonstrated that an influence of a technological medium component is negligible for recalibration.
